Since Monday
(August 11), a large-scale military operation has been underway in various
areas of Kaukhali Upazila in Rangamati district.
Yesterday,
Tuesday (August 12) around 4 PM, a group of army personnel from the Godarpar
Army Camp in Betbunia arrived at the Chowdhury Para Government Primary School,
located in Ward 9 of Betbunia Union, and stayed there overnight. This morning
(Wednesday), the group moved to Dhupchari Bazar and has been patrolling various
areas.
It has been
reported that they are also checking people's mobile phones. Locals say the
army is questioning people about their names, addresses, and the whereabouts of
UPDF (United People's Democratic Front) members.
Meanwhile,
another group of army personnel from the Bottoli Army Camp in Kaukhali visited
Hirakazi Hill yesterday afternoon and then stayed overnight at the Shuknachari
Government Primary School in Ward 4 of Fatikchari Union. That team is now
stationed in Headman Para of the Dabbua area today (Wednesday).

Earlier, on
Monday (August 11), two army teams from the Furamon and Champatoli Army Camps
in Ghagra came and stayed overnight at the Junumachara Government Primary
School. On Tuesday, they patrolled throughout the day in Kozoichari, Levapara,
and Chelachara before returning to their respective camps in the afternoon.
These
periodic military operations across the Kaukhali area have created widespread
anxiety, apprehension, and resentment among the local population.

In a related
development, on Wednesday, a group of armed individuals under the leadership of
Balya Chakma — a member of the army-backed vigilante group — attempted to
abduct Lakshmi Bhushan Chakma, a farmer, from Ghagra Bazar. He is a resident of
Upor Para village in Kozoichari, Ghagra Union.
However,
according to the latest report received at the time of writing (12 noon), due
to pressure from the public and local elders, the vigilantes were forced to
release him.
