During an ongoing military operation in Panchari of Khagrachari
district, army personnel have reportedly physically abused a man and carried
out searches at the homes of three individuals, including a member of the
United People's Democratic Front (UPDF), in Ratnasen Karbari Para of Ward No.
2, Chenghi Union.
The victim of the physical abuse has been identified as Chizi
Chakma, son of the late Krishna Ram Chakma, from Karalyachari, Buddharam Para.
In addition, the army searched the home of UPDF member Sur Mongol
Chakma along with two other residences. Locals reported that, although no
illegal items were found during the search of Sur Mongol Chakma’s house, the
army took away various household items including quilts, mattresses, blankets,
a gas cylinder, books, and oil containers.
Witnesses further claimed that, during the search, the
army—accompanied by a former local public representative—verbally threatened
Sur Mongol Chakma’s wife and behaved arrogantly toward her.
The homes of two other villagers were also searched. The victims
were identified as Amal Mitra Chakma, son of the late Prafulla Chakma, and
Priyo Chakma.
It is worth noting that since Monday, August 25, a group of army
personnel has been stationed in Ratnasen Karbari Para. Army operations have
also been ongoing in several other locations in Panchari since the same date.
Due to the continuous military presence and operations, local
residents are reportedly living in a state of fear and anxiety.
