Three residents of Chikon Chan Para village in Logang
Union of Panchari Upazila, Khagrachari district, have allegedly been subjected
to inhumane torture by the army.
According to local sources, the incident took place
yesterday, Tuesday (23 December 2025).
The victims have been identified as Sohel Chakma (32),
son of Jamini Ranjan Chakma, Priti Chakma (34), son of Sadhan Chandra Chakma,
and Gyan Shanti Chakma (32), son of Manikya Kishore Chakma.
All three are residents of Chikon Chan Para village.
It is reported that at around 10:00 a.m. yesterday, a
group of 15–20 army personnel from a temporary army camp established in the
Chammey Adam area went to Chikon Chan Para village. There, the soldiers
allegedly took several people, including local representatives, hostage and
subjected them to interrogations, asking questions such as: “Where are the UPDF
members? Where did they eat? Why did you give them food?” They also demanded
that the villagers identify members of the UPDF.
Later, at around 2:30 p.m., the army personnel carried
out operations at several locations while keeping the villagers hostage. When
they failed to find any UPDF members, they went to the Chammey Adam area in the
evening. There, they allegedly subjected the three villagers mentioned above to
severe physical abuse using sticks and gun butts, and trampled them with their
boots.
At that time, the soldiers reportedly threatened to
shoot and kill the victims if news of the torture was made public.
It has been alleged that the army carried out the
torture based on false information provided by the JSS (Santu Group).
Local residents further allege that for the past three
months, a group of armed members of the JSS (Santu Group) has been stationed in
the neighboring Machayachara area of Chikon Chan Para. Despite complaints from
the local population, the army has taken no action against them and instead has
been oppressing and harassing ordinary villagers.
The residents have demanded justice for the torture of
the three villagers and called for an immediate end to oppression, harassment,
and abuse of the local population.
