Bimal Tripura, who was critically injured in a
settler attack stemming from a land dispute in the Headman Para (Khalpara) area
of Kamৃlchari
Union under Khagrachari Sadar Upazila, has died while undergoing treatment in
Chattogram.
It has been confirmed that he passed away at 6:20 pm
on Friday (23 January 2026) while receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical
College Hospital.
Earlier, following the settler attack on the
afternoon of 14 January, Bimal Tripura was admitted to Khagrachari Sadar
Hospital in critical condition. As his condition deteriorated, the attending
physician referred him to Chattogram for advanced treatment. He was
subsequently admitted to a private hospital in Chattogram. When his condition
worsened further, he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Later, at noon on 15 January, he was transferred to
Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he had remained in critical
condition for several days before his death.
The late Bimal Tripura was the son of Manoram
Tripura, a resident of Noya Para in Ward No. 4 of Kamalchari Union.
It is reported that a long-standing land dispute
existed between Thoaihlaong Chowdhury, a resident of Headman Para, and Abdul
Bashir of Bhuachari village. Thoaihlaong Chowdhury had established a mango
orchard on the disputed land 10–12 years ago. A court case regarding the land
is currently pending. Although the Land Office had planned to conduct an
investigation some time ago, officials reportedly did not proceed due to
threats from settlers.
On Wednesday, 14 January, Thoaihlaong Chowdhury went
to clean his mango orchard along with two laborers, Bimal Tripura and Milan
Chakma. Upon receiving the information, a group of settlers led by Abdul Bashir
arrived from Bhuachari at around 3:30 pm and obstructed them from cleaning the
orchard. During an ensuing altercation, the settlers attacked Thoaihlaong
Chowdhury (69) and his two laborers—Bimal Tripura (37) and Milan Chakma
(40)—with sharp weapons.
As a result, all three were injured. It was also
reported that Abdul Bashir and his two sons sustained minor injuries during the
incident.
Following the attack, the injured were admitted to
Khagrachari Sadar Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, Bimal Tripura
was referred to Chattogram by the attending physician. The settlers reportedly
inflicted severe wounds on him by striking his head and various parts of his
body with sharp weapons.
Meanwhile, police have reportedly arrested two
individuals—Md. Abdur Rashid and Md. Al Amin—in connection with the case filed
by Mongshitu Marma over the incident. According to police, Abdur Rashid was
arrested from Hathazari in Chattogram, while Al Amin was arrested on 22 January
from Kandirpar in Kumilla.
