Police have recovered the body of a man with his hands
tied behind his back from the Chengi River in the Burighat area of Naniarchar
upazila in Rangamati. The deceased has been identified as Shambhu Bikash
Chakma, 48. The report was first published by Prothom Alo.
According to the report, the body was recovered on
Thursday afternoon, May 28, 2026, from the Chengi River near Rauf Tila in the
Burighat area.
Shambhu Bikash Chakma was a resident of Dojorpara in
Ward No. 8 of Naniarchar Union and the son of the late Jamini Mohan Chakma.
Rupak Chakma, the ward member of Ward No. 8 of
Naniarchar Union, told Prothom Alo that around midnight on Monday, May 25,
2026, three to four masked individuals abducted Shambhu Bikash Chakma from his
home. He had remained missing since then, and the family was informed about the
recovery of the body by phone from the local police station.

Towfikul Islam told Prothom Alo that the body bore visible injuries to the
chest and neck, and that the victim’s hands were tied behind his back when the
body was recovered. Legal procedures are currently underway.

Editor's Note: Local sources claim that the
victim had practiced black magic in the area. Residents suspect the killing may
have been motivated by personal enmity related to his activities. Another
source reported that on the same night he was abducted, he was taken to the
Hemanta Para area of Mahalchhari, killed there, and his body was later dumped
into the Chengi River.
