Local residents in the Kukichhara area of Guimara
upazila in Khagrachhari have reportedly detained and handed over a man accused
of raping a 27-year-old widowed Marma woman to police.
The accused, identified as Mrasa Marma (35), is a
resident of Baraitoli village under Hafchhari Union in Guimara upazila. His
father is the late Are Marma.
According to reports, on June 13, the accused
allegedly took the victim to Hathazari on the pretext of arranging employment
for her. He then brought her to a house near a poultry farm in the Hathazari
area, where four Indigenous men, including Mrasa Marma, were living.
It is alleged that, following a premeditated plan, the
victim was forcibly administered sleeping pills and subsequently gang-raped.
According to the victim's statement, the four men raped her in turns.
Family members stated that the victim became seriously
ill due to an excessive dose of the sleeping medication. After initial
treatment failed to improve her condition, she was admitted to Khagrachhari
Modern District Sadar Hospital on the evening of Wednesday, June 17. Relatives
reported that she has not yet fully recovered.
In a Facebook post on June 17, Jyotisara Bhante wrote,
"Had law enforcement authorities not called me yesterday, I would not even
have known that a girl from near my monastery had fallen victim to the claws of
some beasts." He stated that, following discussions with local elected
representatives, karbaris (village headmen), and community elders, arrangements
were made to admit the victim to a government hospital. He also noted that the
victim had not regained consciousness by the time she was hospitalized.
In another post, Bhante stated that local residents
had detained the accused and informed the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Guimara
Police Station before handing him over to police.
The victim's younger brother said the accused was from
a neighboring area and had taken his sister to Chattogram under the promise of
securing a job. Instead, he alleged, the accused brought her to a house in
Hathazari, where several men raped her. He added that the family is preparing
to file a case.
Sources further said that because both the accused and
the victim are residents of neighboring villages, local Buddhist monk Jyotisara
Bhante, along with karbaris and elders from Kukichhara and Baraitoli villages,
held discussions regarding the incident. Following those discussions, local
residents detained Mrasa Marma and handed him over to Guimara Police Station on
Thursday afternoon, June 18.
Md. Sohrawardy, Officer-in-Charge of Guimara Police
Station, confirmed that a man had been detained on allegations of rape. He
stated that legal action would be taken and the accused would be produced
before the court once a formal case is filed.
