A group of army personnel allegedly surrounded a local
resident's home and harassed family members under the pretext of interrogation
in Nangalmora village, under the Gangaram area of Sajek, Rangamati, on Friday
afternoon.
According to local sources, a 19-member military
contingent from the Gangaram Tiger Tila camp raided Nangalmora village around
1:00 PM. Upon arrival, the troops cordoned off the house of Bakul Chakma (27),
son of the late Nil Kanta Chakma, without offering any prior cause.
The victim's wife, Champa Chakma, reported that the
soldiers immediately besieged their residence and subjected the family to
intense questioning regarding political activities.
"As soon as the army
personnel arrived, they surrounded our house. They began asking us where the
UPDF (United People's Democratic Front) was holding a meeting and harassed us
during the process," Champa Chakma stated.”
However, local reports indicate that no UPDF meetings
were scheduled or taking place in the area at the time. The army members
reportedly left the scene and returned to their camp shortly after the
interrogation.
Local conscious citizens and community leaders
expressed strong concern over the incident, stating that such actions against
ordinary civilians are unacceptable and undermine the image of the armed
forces. They called on the military authorities to immediately cease
unwarranted harassment and oppression of innocent citizens in the region.
