Public concern is growing in Ramgarh, Khagrachhari,
amid continued Bangladesh Army activity in the area since the beginning of this
month. The Army was reportedly active at several locations in Ramgarh again on
Monday, August 17.
According to local residents, at around 10:00 am, a
group of approximately 13 to 14 Army personnel from the Batnatali Army Camp
went to the area around the Kali Temple in Gujapara, Ramgarh. The soldiers
later reportedly moved to and took up a position at the shop of Babu Chakma in
Morakaillya Para, according to local sources.
Meanwhile, another group from the same camp was
reportedly seen moving through Chhotabelchhari Para towards the Globe Garden
area, where they were said to have taken up a position.
The continued military activity has heightened concern
among local residents. They fear that the situation could lead to harassment
and intimidation, as well as possible attempts to facilitate land occupation by
Bengali settlers.
Several local residents alleged that, a few days ago,
settlers had attempted to blame indigenous people for a fire that reportedly
originated from within their own community and destroyed a Bengali settler’s
cowshed in the Gorukata area. They described the incident as an alleged attempt
to create a pretext for an attack on indigenous residents.
They also alleged that settlers have recently been holding rallies and gatherings on a regular basis, claiming ownership over areas where indigenous communities have established settlements.
Against this backdrop, the continued presence and
activity of the Army has raised concerns and fears among indigenous residents
in Ramgarh.
