Bangladesh Army personnel allegedly subjected two
members of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and a local youth to
severe physical torture in Dighinala, Khagrachhari.
The alleged victims have been identified as:
1. Piyushon Chakma (28), son of Amar Dhan Chakma, of
Alamdepo (Lakshichhari), Ward No. 4, Sajek Union, Baghaichhari, Rangamati.
2. Rubel Chakma (32), son of the late Murti Ranjan
Chakma, of Indramoni Para, Dighinala, Khagrachhari.
3. Rikon Chakma (29), son of the late Gyan Ratan
Chakma, of Indra Moni Karbari Para, Dighinala, Khagrachhari.
Piyushon Chakma and Rubel Chakma are reportedly
members of the UPDF, while Rikon Chakma is a local youth from the area.
According to local sources, at around 1:00 a.m. on
Sunday, August 16, a 20-member Bangladesh Army team from the Baradam Army Camp
in Dighinala, accompanied by an alleged armed associate identified as Ripon
Chakma, raided Indramoni Para.
The soldiers reportedly surrounded a local resident’s
house and detained Piyushon Chakma and Rubel Chakma, who were staying there
overnight, along with local youth Rikon Chakma.
The three men were allegedly subjected to extensive questioning and severe physical abuse by the soldiers. They reportedly sustained injuries to various parts of their bodies as a result of the alleged torture.
According to local sources, UPDF member Rubel Chakma
was already physically unwell due to kidney-related complications.
After the alleged torture, the soldiers reportedly
released the three men and returned to their camp.
The incident reportedly caused panic among residents
of the village. Local residents have expressed anger and condemned what they
described as a brutal overnight raid allegedly carried out by Army personnel
accompanied by armed associates.
