Three men who had gone to Lakshmichhari market in Khagrachhari to sell pork were allegedly abducted and robbed of Tk 38,000 by a group of masked assailants led by Durjoy Chakma and his associates. Local sources allege that the group has the backing of the Bangladesh Army.
The victims have been identified as Kalaia Chakma, 30, son of Alpedha Chakma (Nilkanti); his younger brother, Nithon Chakma; and Babu Chakma. All three are originally from Simana Para in Lakshmichhari Union No. 1 of Lakshmichhari, Khagrachari but currently live in Mithachhara, Mirsarai Upazila, Chattogram.
According to information gathered, Sunday, August 30, 2026, was the weekly market day in Lakshmichhari. Kalaia Chakma and the other two men travelled from Mithachhara to Lakshmichhari market in the morning to sell pork.
They were allegedly intercepted by three masked assailants led by Durjoy Chakma and taken to Jurgachhari, where they were reportedly held hostage at a shop beneath a tamarind tree.
The assailants allegedly took Tk 21,000 from Kalaia Chakma, Tk 2,000 from Nithon Chakma, and Tk 15,000 from Babu Chakma.
Nithon and Babu were released after some time, but Kalaia was allegedly kept in captivity throughout the day.
According to reports, Kalaia was eventually released at around 9 p.m. into the custody of a Lakshmichhari resident identified as Lendu Ma.
The victims and others familiar with the incident
alleged that Durjoy Chakma carried out the abduction and robbery in connection
with the disappearance of his younger brother, Lakshisen Chakma, who reportedly
went missing in Mirsarai about a year ago.
