A JUMMA college girl was
subjected to sexual harassment by some Bengali youths in Balaghata of Bandarban
town, reports The Daily Purbokone, published from Chittagong.
The daily in its yesterday’s (2 February) issue said, “The
incident happened on Friday afternoon at Balaghata bazar.”
“Md.
Imran, his friend Hamid and another youth sexually harassed Hlamenu Marma, an
eleventh grade female student residing at Women’s College’s residential hostel,
when she went to bazar for shopping.” it added.
She
was also harassed and threatened by the same youths while she was in the bazar
earlier in the morning.
Hlamenu
reported the incident to the hostel authority who in their turn informed the
police about the matter.
The
college’s assistant, Naishemong Marma, and a local trader Liakot said, “We were
present there when the incident took place. We tried to prevent the miscreants,
but they did not heed us and instead snatched away the assistant’s mobile phone
set.”
The
hostel’s superintendent, Farzana Akter, said that initially the girl had not
informed them of the incident and that when the matter became public they
informed the police about it.
She
confirmed that Hlamenu was sexually harassed by the Bengali youths.
Local
people informed that Imran is a member of the Bengali Jubo Parishad (Bengali
Youth Council). He and his friends are absconding after the incident.
The
Officer-in-charge of Bandarban Sadar Thana, Md Imtiaz, told local journalists
that he would investigate the incident. “If the allegation is proved to be
true, we will take actions against the delinquent youths.” he added.
