News No. 94/2014,Friday, October 17, 2014
‘Watch out, cantonment
ahead. Demonstrations, rallies and processions are restricted beyond this
point.’
This is what is
written in a signboard put up by the army in front of Guimarma Town
Hall on Khagrachari – Chittagong road on 14 October.
About half a kilometer
from where the signboard is put up is Guimara bazzar, where public meetings and
demonstrations usually take place, and where the PCP has held a number of
demonstrations in the recent months.
The purpose of putting
up the signboard is, therefore, to restrict the right of the Jumma
organizations to freedom of association and assembly.
It is not known under whose
authority the army has put up the signboard, but it definitely violates the
constitution of Bangladesh which gives its citizens the right to free
speech and assembly.
