SIX
Jummas were injured, one of them seriously, on Thursday in attacks on Higher
Secondary Certificate examinees carried out separately by an army-backed JSS
Reformist group and Bengali settlers in Khagrachari town.
The first
attack by JSS Reformists took place at 1:30 p.m. in front of the Cantonment’s
canteen as the Jumma students were returning home after attending an
examination in Khagrachari Cantonment Public School and College.
Those
that took part in the attack included, among others, Dipon Chakma, Bipul
Chakma, Jonal Chakma, Bijoy Chakma, Arpon Chakma, Mohamuni Chakma, Atra Chakma,
Omlan Chakma and Uttom Tripura, a Hill Students’ Council (PCP) press release
said.
The
attackers were armed with pistols, machetes, sticks and bicycle chains.
Four or
five more were also injured, including their CNG auto rickshaw driver.
The
second attack took place a few minutes later near Chengi Square after they were
rescued by other students.
Members
of the Bangali Chattra Porishod (Bengali Students’ Council), an ultra communal
outfit of the illegal Bengali settlers, carried out the attack, the PCP press
release said.
‘Ten to
twelve settler youths led by Bijoy Das, Johny Dey and Ashraful took part in the
attack’, it added.
Earlier
on April 16, the army-backed terrorists had attempted to kidnap Debashish
Chakma, a HSC examinee, from in front of the cantonment canteen.
He could
not attend the remaining exams because both the college authority and the local
administration had failed to address his security concern following the attack
on him.
