Bijoy Chakma, a former student of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, was
attacked by members of the JSS Santu group while attending prayers at the
Shakyamuni Buddhist Monastery in Mirpur, Dhaka, on the occasion of Madhu
Purnima.
The incident took place this evening (Saturday, September 6, 2025).
According to sources, Bijoy Chakma had gone to the Shakyamuni
Buddhist Monastery in Mirpur this evening to participate in religious prayers
for Madhu Purnima. Upon entering the monastery, an unknown individual called
him outside. When Bijoy stepped outside, he was surrounded by Abhi Chakma—a
known cadre of Santu Larma’s student organization—along with 4-5 associates,
while Abhi was smoking a cigarette.
At that moment, Abhi snatched Bijoy’s phone and accused him, saying,
“Aren’t you the one using fake IDs to insult me online? I’ve got you now.”
Even though no evidence was found after checking the phone, Abhi and
his associates proceeded to physically assault Bijoy.
When Bijoy called his friends to help resolve the situation, Abhi
Chakma and other cadres under Santu Larma attacked them as well. A violent
clash broke out between the two groups, resulting in several people being
injured.
Sources related to the monastery revealed that there had been a
pre-planned effort to take control of the Shakyamuni Buddhist Monastery.
Dipayan Khisa, a close cadre of Santu Larma, had long been trying to take over
the monastery's management committee, reportedly due to his lack of any stable
income. As part of this effort, they had also been defaming the head monk
online in various ways. A few days ago, they reportedly succeeded in taking
control of the monastery’s management committee.
It is believed that this attack on Bijoy Chakma was part of an
attempt to assert dominance and consolidate control over the monastery.
