Members of the Bangladesh Army reportedly carried out an operation in the Kattoli area of Longadu Upazila in Rangamati district on Thursday, during which one man was allegedly beaten and several villagers were briefly detained.
According to local sources, at around 12:00 p.m. on March 12, a team of approximately 35 soldiers led by Captain Ashiq, commander of the Bame Longadu Sub-Zone under the Maini Zone, arrived in Boro Kattoli by an engine-powered boat.
During the operation, the soldiers allegedly assaulted a local resident identified as Shibrata Chakma. They also detained three other villagers: Shanti Lal Chakma (father of Sumona), Dilip Kumar Chakma, and Police Kumar Chakma.
The reason for detaining the villagers was not immediately known. However, sources said they were later released at a local internet shop in the village.
Earlier, the army personnel had taken position at a place known as Punyadhan Chuk, which is located about one mile from positions reportedly held by armed members of the JSS (Santu) group. The group is said to operate from the Kukichhara and Pagli Chhara areas. Despite the proximity, the soldiers reportedly did not advance toward those locations.
The army unit returned to its camp at around 2:45
p.m., according to local sources.
