On April 8, a group of Bangladesh Army personnel conducted a late-night operation in Kukichhara village under Guimara Upazila in Khagrachari District.
According to information received from local sources, at approximately 2:00 a.m., a joint team from Sindukchhari Zone and Naikyapara Camp entered the village and carried out a search at the residence of a local villager, Konghla Pru Marma (47), son of the late Akhai Marma. The soldiers reportedly woke him from sleep and asked whether anyone had recently fled the area using a flashlight, before informing him that they would search his home.
During the search, army personnel allegedly claimed to have recovered a plastic-wrapped, hard, iron-like object from the household’s water storage area and handed it to the homeowner. The incident caused fear among the family members.
The victim later stated that, when the plastic-wrapped item was opened, it was found to contain several toothbrushes and rusted pieces of iron.
Family members reported restrictions during the operation. Konghla Pru Marma’s wife, Sanu Marma, said she was prevented from calling a nearby relative and was unable to reach the village headman despite attempts to contact him.
At one point, a member of the army asked the victim whether he knew Angyajai Marma, the headman of Nakrai Para. After he confirmed that he did, the soldier facilitated a phone conversation between them.
According to the victim, in the early hours of April 8, the soldiers handed him 300 taka and advised him not to take the matter to heart. They also told him he could collect notebooks and pens for his children from the Naikyapara Camp before leaving the area.
Local residents expressed concern over the incident,
particularly as it occurred ahead of the upcoming Sangrai festival, raising
fears about safety and potential harassment in the area.
