A member of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) was shot and killed by a group of armed assailants in Khagrachari district on Wednesday morning, April 8, 2026, according to local sources.
The incident took place at around 9:30 a.m. in the Akbari area of Ward No. 2 under Khagrachari Union No. 1 in Khagrachari Sadar Upazila.
The deceased has been identified as Newton Chakma, also known as Nirmal (47), son of the late Sonadhan Chakma. He was originally from Gobghona village in Mogban Union under Rangamati Sadar Upazila and had been residing with his family in the Joint Farm area of Sadar Union under Mahalchari Upazila in Khagrachari.
According to local sources, Newton Chakma and another UPDF member had gone to the Akbari area earlier in the morning for organizational activities. While they were there, an armed group of approximately eight individuals, reportedly led by Ajit Chakma, arrived on motorcycles from the Maischhari direction and launched a sudden attack on them.
During the attack, one of the UPDF members managed to escape, while Newton Chakma was shot and killed at the scene.
Local residents reported that the body was still lying
at the scene as of the latest information, and police were on their way to the
location.
