On Tuesday morning, May 5, 2026, armed cadres of the PCJSS (Santu group) carried out an attack on UPDF member Sohel Chakma at a place known as Nuo Dokan in Ward No. 1 of Bangaltali Union, under Baghaichhari Upazila in Rangamati District. He narrowly escaped as the gunfire missed its target.

According to local sources, a group of 20-25 armed cadres from the Santu group entered the Bangaltali area at some point on the night of May 4. They reportedly took positions around Nuo Dokan and lay in wait.

At around 7:00 AM on May 5, Sohel Chakma, a local UPDF organizer, was heading toward Ujobazar on a motorcycle for organizational work when the attackers suddenly opened fire on him. The shots missed, allowing him to escape unharmed. He survived by a narrow margin.

Eyewitnesses said that after the attack, the armed group went to Nuo Dokan and seized mobile phones from shopkeepers and civilians before leaving toward the Balukhmajje area.

Locals reported that the attack was led by the Santu group’s armed commander, Bhagya Chakma, along with Rubel Chakma, who had reportedly defected from the Masked Group and taken shelter with the Santu faction.

Although no immediate action was taken against the attackers, army personnel arrived at the scene shortly after the group had left. They are currently stationed at Nuo Dokan and Jarulchhari Junior School.

Some locals have expressed suspicion over possible links between the Bangladesh Army and the attackers.
