Bangladesh Army personnel have been accused of conducting intrusive searches at the homes of two villagers in Bame Baibachhara and Dane Baibachhara villages in Sajek Union, Baghaichari, Rangamati.
According to local sources, a group of 70 to 80 army personnel from Baghaihat Army Zone entered the two villages at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4.
The soldiers first went to the home of Chicho Chakma, son of Lakshindra Chakma, in Bame Baibachhara and asked about Babudhan Chakma, convener of the Sajek Public Rights Protection Committee. They subsequently entered the house and conducted a search, allegedly harassing the family and ransacking household belongings.
The soldiers also reportedly searched the home of Kalpa Ranjan Chakma, son of Choroppi Chakma, in neighboring Dane Baibachhara village.
After the searches, the army personnel reportedly proceeded to Surungnala village in the Gangaram area at around midnight. However, no searches or incidents of harassment were reported there.
The nighttime raids have sparked anger among local residents. They alleged that instead of taking action against armed members of the PCJSS (Santu faction), the army was harassing ordinary villagers. They also accused the military of seeking to intimidate and pressure those campaigning for the withdrawal of the faction's armed members from Sajek to ensure public safety.
A local elder strongly criticized the army's conduct,
saying its actions had further heightened suspicions of collusion between the
military and armed members of the PCJSS (Santu faction). He added that the
army's role was contributing to instability in Sajek.
