THERE has been a terrorist attempt to burn down an
office of the United Peoples’ Democratic Front (UPDF) in Khagrachari district
town, police and UPDF sources have confirmed.
A press release issued by UPDF has blamed Santu group for
the arson attack on its office at Swanirbhor bazaar on the outskirts of the
town.
According to police personnel and night guards posted
there, 4 – 5 unidentified attackers had set fire to the office. ‘We immediately
rushed there and doused the fire. Thus the office house has been saved from
being completely burned down,’ a policeman said.
He said the incident happened last night at around 2:30am.
An UPDF activist said a chair, a door mat, and a part of a
floor mat had been burnt down, while a wooden table had been partially damaged
by the fire.
Pradeep Chakma, organizer of UPDF Khagrachari district
unit, has condemned the attack and said, ‘It is a terrorist act committed by
Santu group out of frustration. Since Santu group has failed to confront UPDF
politically and ideologically, it has now begun to target UPDF and its
properties for terrorist attacks’.
‘In the last few months Santu Larma’s hired goons have
carried out a number of terrorist attacks,’ he further said, adding his evil
design would not succeed. ‘The people of the CHT will give a befitting reply to
his terrorist and destructive politics.’
