3 PCP activists arrested by army in Naniachar

News No. 74/2012, Thursday, September 06, 2012

THREE activists of the Hill Students’ Council, a front organization of the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), were arrested by army in Naniachar, Rangamati district.

The soldiers arrested them at about noon yesterday, Wednesday, from Naniachar bazaar while they were collecting donations for the PCP’s 17 September Education Day programme to be held in Dhaka.

The arrested PCP members -- Shohel Chakma, office secretary, Prashanta Chakma, information and publicity secretary, and Supayan Chakma, a member of Naniachar Model High School branch -- were taken to Naniachar zone headquarters for questioning.

Later on at 2pm, the army released Prashanta Chakma and Supayan Chakma when the local elected representatives intervened.

However, the army handed Shohel Chakma over to the police.

The PCP condemned the arrest of its leaders as “arbitrary, undemocratic and illegal” and demanded that the administration also releases Shohel Chakma unconditionally.

It staged protest demonstrations in Naniachar and Kudukchari yesterday and will enforce a blockade of roads and waterways in Naniarchar Upazilla today to press home its demand.
