A 12-YEAR old Jumma girl has been subjected to an
attempted rape while on her way back home in Ramgarh under Khagrachari
district.
According
to sources, the teenage girl and her mother from Kalapani village under
Patachara Union No. 2 in Ramgarh Upazila went to Datmara bazaar in Fatikchari
in the morning yesterday, Tuesday.
At
around 1pm, the victim was returning
home on a hired motorbike, leaving her mother behind in the bazaar.
When
they reached a lonely place in Balukhali Nashia tea estate, Md. Alamgir, 25,
son of Chan Mia of Datmara, the driver of the motorbike, halted, dragged her
into a roadside jungle and then tried to rape her.
At
that time, two people -- Khalek, a bamboo trader, and Shahajahan, a local
villager, -- were passing by the road.
Seeing
them, the girl gave a loud shout to attract their attention, which made the
culprit, Alamgir, scared and run away.
The
passersby then rescued her and escorted her back home.
Sexual
violence against Jumma women is commonplace in the Chittagong Hill Tracts,
while the perpetrators are rarely prosecuted.
Since
January this year, at least 8 cases of rape and 5 cases of attempted rape have
been reported.
Two
of these victims have been killed after being raped.
