Settlers launches reprisal attack in Matiranga

News No. 07/2013, Saturday, January 26, 2013

BENGALI settlers last night attacked two Jumma villages in Matiranga of Khgrachari district, burning down a number of houses, following the shooting down of a brick-kiln worker and wounding two others by unidentified gunmen.

According to various sources, the shooting incident took place at 7:45pm at Bot-toli Number 10 in Matiranga Purashava, resulting in the death of Farook Hossain, 35, a brick-kiln worker. Two others, Abul Hossain and Shahajahan, were also wounded.

Following this incident, the settlers attacked Horidhan Marma Para and Hemongo Karbari Para, about 5-6 miles north-east of Matiranga town, setting fire to the Jumma houses.

“The settlers came, shouting anti-Jumma slogans, and we fled our homes in fear”, a villager of Horidhan Para told chtnews.com.

However, he could not say how many houses have been burnt down.

Another source said Jummas from three villages fled their homes and took refuge in the jungle.
