A JUMMA youth was
arrested by army on Monday from Jaliapara while he was on his way back home
from Guimara bazar.
The arrested has been
identified as Kongra Marma, 18, a resident of Pilabhanga village under
Patachara Union.
His father, Kyojori
Marma, said no reason was given for the arrest.
He said Kongra was
arrested at 3pm from a shop at Jaliapara while he was returning from Guimara
bazaar.
The army handed him
over to Guimara police station. However, it has not been immediately known what
charges were brought against him.
His arrest comes
barely two days after the arrest and death of Duronto Chakma alias Duran, 52, a
member of the M. N. Larma faction of the JSS, in army custody in Matiranga.
He was also a member
of the now-defunct Shanti Bahini guerrilla group and laid down arms following
the signing of the CHT Accord in 1997.
The extra-judicial killing
of Duran raised concern among the Jumma activists as well as human rights
organizations of the country.
The Ain-o-Salish
Kendra, a prominent HR organization, has expressed serious concern about his
death in army custody and demanded appropriate actions against those
responsible through a fair inquiry.
The latest arrest also
comes four days after the arrest and torture of Real Tripura, a leader of the
Hill Students Council, at the hands of the army in Guimara.
He was eventually
released on 9 August after PCP (Bengali acronym for Hill Students Council)
called for a blockade of roads in the area.
