AT LEAST six Jumma
villagers were detained while one of them was tortured during an army operation
in several villages in Kaokhali Upzila.
Three members of the
Nobyo Mukhosh Bahini vigilante group accompanied the army during the operation
that began on Monday night (January 22) and lasted till Wednesday morning.
According to sources,
NMB chief Tapan Jyoti Chakma alias Borma and his cohorts Pandob Chakma alias
Ronoy and Emon Chakma alias Abong were clad in military uniform.
The soldiers raided
six villages – Talukdar Para, Ugolchari, Azhachari, Porapara, Naw-bhanga and
Dobakaba.
They arrested
Shantimoy Talukdar, 32, from Talukdar para, Bele Chakma, 25, from
Ugolchari, Krishna Chakma, 27, from Porapara, Riten Chakma, 35, from Azhachari,
Sonamoni Chakma, 38, from Naw-bhanga and Shashi Bhushan Chakma, 55, from
Dobakaba.
Of them, Riten Chakma
was able to flee away from Naw-bhanga stream, while Sonamoni Chakma was
tortured by the vigilantes.
The rest of the detained Jummas were
freed after the operation.
