A man detained by members of the Bangladesh Army in
Panchhari Upazila was later released after authorities determined he had no
links to the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), according to local
sources.
The incident occurred Thursday afternoon, March 19,
2026, in Moratila, under Ultachhari Union of Panchari Upazila, Khagrachari.
The individual, identified as Bhut Tripura, 28, son of
Din Mohan Tripura, is a resident of Heladhula Para in Latiban Union. He had
reportedly been visiting his in-laws in Padmini Para, Moratila, for the past
several days.
Witnesses said that around 2:30 p.m., a group of
approximately 20 to 25 army personnel arrived in three vehicles from the
Panchhari Sub-Zone and conducted an operation in the Moratila market area. At
the time, Tripura was sitting at a local shop having tea when soldiers
approached him, suspected him of being affiliated with the UPDF, and took him
into custody for questioning at the sub-zone.
According to sources, the army later verified his
identity with the help of a local informant. After confirming that he had no
involvement with the UPDF or any other organization, he was released.
During questioning, Tripura was reportedly asked about
the whereabouts and identities of suspected UPDF members in the area.
The incident has contributed to ongoing concerns among
residents, who allege repeated harassment and mistreatment by security forces
in Panchhari. Local community members have called for an end to such actions
against civilians.
