An assistant teacher at a government primary school in
Lama Upazila, Bandarban, has been accused of physically assaulting a
six-year-old first-grade student after allegedly turning off the school’s CCTV
cameras to conceal the incident.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred on
Wednesday morning at Bochhapara Government Primary School under Gajalia Union.
The accused teacher, Faridul Alam, a muslim settler, allegedly switched off the
CCTV cameras during class hours and assaulted the child, identified as Reshmi
Tripura.
Local sources and fellow students reported that the
teacher asked the child to write the alphabet on the blackboard. When she
failed to do so, he allegedly slapped her repeatedly. To prevent her cries from
being heard, he reportedly covered her mouth. It is further alleged that he
disabled the CCTV cameras to avoid leaving evidence. At one point, the child
lost consciousness. She was later taken home by classmates, who informed her
family.
The incident sparked outrage in the area after a video
of the child’s mother crying and protesting at the school circulated widely on
social media. In the video, she is seen demanding an explanation for the
alleged assault, while the head teacher and other staff remained silent.
The victim’s mother, Rajani Tripura, stated that she
and her husband were working in the fields when they were informed that their
daughter had fainted. After returning home and learning about the incident,
they rushed to the school along with local residents. She alleged that the
teacher rendered her daughter unconscious by slapping her and questioned how
parents could feel safe sending their children to school if such actions
continue.
Angered by the incident, local residents reportedly
confined the accused teacher inside the school office and demanded immediate
action against him.
When contacted for comment, the accused teacher
declined to respond, stating that he was busy.
Lama Upazila Education Officer Ashraf confirmed that
the victim’s family had reported the incident. He stated that there are no
rules permitting such treatment of young children and advised the family to
file a written complaint. He added that an investigation would be conducted and
legal action would be taken accordingly.
Parinay Chakma, acting District Primary Education
Officer of Bandarban, said he had instructed the upazila education officer to
take the necessary legal steps after hearing about the incident.
