RATAN SMRITI CHAKMA,
organizing secretary of the Hill Students’ Council’s (PCP) Khagrachari district
branch, has been arrested from Khazur Bagan in Khagrachari town as the police
dispersed a crowd of PCP activists demanding uninterrupted electricity supply.
PCP activists took to
the streets today to protest frequent and protracted power outages which has
been causing enormous inconveniences to the HSC examinees.
They tried to bring
out a procession from Upazila Parishad ground at 10 a.m., but the police
and army personnel prevented them, taking away the banner from them.
Ratan Smriti Chakma,
who was leading the protest, argued with the police, demanding an explanation
as to under which authority of law they snatched away their banner.
But the police refused
to answer and arrested him and dispersed the other PCP activists instead.
The PCP in a statement
issued after the incident condemned the arrest and demanded his immediate and
unconditional release.
