AT least seven Jumma
activists were arrested yesterday as an alliance of eight Jumma organizations
blocked roads in Khagrachari district to press home their demand for release of
their arrested leaders including Hill Women’s Federation president Nirupa
Chakma.
During the half-day
district-wide blockade, which passed off peacefully, the law enforcement personnel
arrested five activists at Alutila and one each in Panchari and Dighinala
Upazilas.
According to sources in
Matiranga, the army raided a house in Hridoy Member Para at Alutila at 3am and
arrested five PCP leaders from there.
The arrested PCP leaders
include Dipankar Tripura, general secretary of PCP Matiranga Upazila branch;
Pradeep Tripura, former GS of PCP Matiranga Pilot High School branch; Batta
Tripura, vice president of PCP Matiranga Pilot High School branch and Suresh
Chakma and Nayan Chakma, president and general secretary of PCP Matiranga
College branch respectively.
They were taken to
Matiranga zone headquarters after the arrest.
In Dighinala, another
PCP activist and a student of Dighinala Degree College, Rupen Chakma, was
arrested from near Dighinala Girls High School while he was on his way home
after the blockade ended at 12 noon.
And in Panchari, a local
Jumma youth named Antar Chakma was reported to have been arrested from Nalkaba
area.
